How effective is the combination of your main product & ancillary text?

In order to get the best possible combination of products we first analysed other similar artists within our chosen genre (indie electronic)  and how they used a combination of products to promote their music. One artist we studied was Mansionair who is the artist of the song we chose to do for our music video, one key feature we found within products for the song ‘Easier’ was a sense of consistency to help portray to the audience that all of the products relate to the same song.

Another key feature we found within their thumbnail, music video and cover art was a simplistic colour scheme which was primarily black and white, this appeared to be a common theme amongst all of the products within this genre so we decided to stay true to the genre and use these conventions in our products as well. We also decided to stay true to the artist Mansionair as it was their product we were promoting, therefore, we decided to use all the conventions they had used to help our products consistent with theirs.

Another artist we analysed was EDEN  and we found similar results with him as well, We analysed the products relating to his song ‘Drugs’ We found a similar colour scheme with all 3 products being quite dull and lacking colour and we found they have a sense of consistency.

We feel as if we have created a set of 3 products which link beautifully together as they have a strong sense of consistency, Throughout our music video, it features scenes of upset and despair as the two characters go through some troubling times after a breakup. this is also portrayed through our ancillary texts as the digipak and poster, as well as the thumbnail for the video, all contain the two actors back to back whilst being blended into each other. This portrays the relationship as they were one unit however they are trying to break free from each other’s grip.

As seen in this set of 4 images (Thumbnail, Poster, Digipak & Video Snippet) we have maintained a strong consistency and used a limited colour scheme to help blend into the genre and stay true to Mansionair’s original colour scheme. This is extremely effective in serving its purpose as it was designed to advertise the artist and their song. Throughout our ancillary texts, the artist name is bold and easy to read in the font we selected and the song name is present at all times as well.  This consistency nicely links all 3 products together to create one overall experience of the audience.

9 Tasty garage Flavas – Digipak Analysis


9 Tasts garage flavas is a 9 track CD with assorted different garage tracks on it. On the digipak we see that there is a dark side and a light side too the image. This reinforces a sense of variety in the CD, as there may be tracks which are more upbeat and happy, and there may be slower, sadder tracks in the CD. The image has a link too the culture of the underground scene because there is an image of a person with their mouth unnaturally open, which has been darkened to show that this person isn’t behaving normally. The person could be gasping for air, they might be gobsmacked, but something tells me that they are not sober and that they have had some kind of drug use in the near past before this photo was taken.

They colour scheme is yellow, orange and black, and this fits with my comment that the picture has a link too there underground scene, as at a lot of underground events, these illuminating lights can often be all the light available, and it also shows night time street lighting which further implies that this photo digipak is for night time/late night party seekers.

With the CD being called ‘9 Tasty Garage Flavas’ we see that a tongue is used in the picture to play on words with the word Flava, which is more commonly associated with DJ’s as opposed to something thats been released by an artist in an alternate genre. Instead, we see a representation of physical taste, which is incorrect because obviously we can’t taste the music/CD, however The music is referred to as tasty and is shown alongside a tongue which also could represent taste, which makes the music seem more physical and ‘in person’ than it really is, which in a way humanises it so that the consumer can identify with it better than most CD’s, which in turn will make them more likely to choose it over a different CD.

Today I worked on making my blog presentable and organised using tags and categories, This is because it was previously just all of the blog posts on the home page and it needed categorising so that it makes it easier to navigate and see all of the work we as a group have produced. Also as a group we compared our music video to other previous years to determine what stage it is at. By doing this we can see how we can improve to get the best possible grade.

Production Schedule

The following document contains a detailed production schedule, This was to help keep us on track and meet deadlines when needed. It is also intended to make the construction of our music video go smoother and make sure we stay on track.



For the music video, we don’t intend to use many props as we want to keep the music video quite raw and heavily focused on the two characters, their feelings and the location.

For the second ‘drop’ of the song we do intend on bringing a guitar to break, as the guitar symbolises beauty. Relationships are a beautiful thing, however, this relationship is broken beyond repair, therefore, we intend to break the guitar to show that their love is broken. We also intend to imply that the guitar was a gift from the girl to the boy to further show spite between the couple when the guitar gets broken.



For our music video, we will have two main actors which will be me and my girlfriend, Sian Merricks. We decided upon these two as they would know the feelings they would experience if they were to loose each other and we needed a couple so that we can really show the good, bad and ugly parts of a relationship which our plot entails.

Lewis & Sebastian will primarily be the directors and camera workers for the music video and collectively we will work together to overcome problems such as lighting and shot framing.

This team will work well together as everyone has their own roles and the workload will be distributed evenly. Myself, Sebastian & Lewis all have drive and passion to make this music video come to life & to make it have real world application.

Sian Merricks is currently in year 12 studying A-Level Media Studies, therefore, she already has an understanding of the planning and workload involved, She has kindly agreed to feature in our music video as the supporting actress needed to help make this music video a reality.


We wished for a location which was isolated and had an abandoned feel in order to further convey the idea that our actors are isolated and battling with their problems. We also wanted a location which was unknown in order to construct the idea that they are lost and need guidance to find normality. We eventually decided on 1 perfect location for our music video.

St Crispins:

The location itself is close and within Northampton making it easily accessible to us as a group. The location is abandoned and run down and as you can see from the imagery below has some extremely interesting areas in which we can create shots and construct our video.

We also aim to film during sunset and dark, therefore, transforming this into an eerie yet really interesting location to film. This, however, could also be bad as the video could come out looking grainy due to the darkness and lack of light. Therefore we will visit the location beforehand and get some recce shots.



We would be aiming to keep the costume casual in order to represent everyday people. This is because the music video is aimed at a wide scope of people as everyone goes through the struggle at some point in their life.

The female will be wearing the same style of clothing as the male, however, will be presented differently through camera work. The clothing should be moderately dark to convey a sense of darkness within the characters after losing each other.


The Male character will be wearing dark casual clothing:


This is to emphasise that he is doing through a dark period in his life, and the casual look suggests he doesn’t really care too much about his appearance at that moment in time as he has other things to worry about.

I made this choice of clothing because it is casual, and doesn’t take attention away from the main theme of the video.
